BECAUSE NAMASTE ISN’T ENOUGH
The yoga and meditation communities are uniquely placed to drive action on environmental issues to the wider public from a position deeply rooted in spiritual values and within a broader lifestyle context.
The time for trying to get our heads up our designer activewear-clad backsides and for gazing passively at our navels is over. As a modern community of practitioners of these disciplines, we must take an active, united lead in pressing for urgent change.
The condition of our environment is rapidly deteriorating. Global warming is the most imminent threat to the survival of our children. Without action, sea levels will rise, severe weather will continue to increase, and famine, flooding and drought will lead to deaths in the hundreds of millions, as well as mass migration and civil unrest across the world. We may even reach tipping point after which our earth will start to transform itself into a much more violent and uncontrollable place.
It's one minute to midnight but we still have a small window of time - a decade, maybe two - to make drastic changes to how we live and consume energy to avoid this outcome. Indeed, by switching to a lifestyle that brings us back into balance with nature over time carbon levels in our atmosphere will drop and we can even reverse much of the destruction that has already occurred to our rainforests, oceans and skies, and to the lives of so many peoples who's lives and cultures are in tatters after losing their land.
