#yogasutrachallenge Book II Sutra 4 – Ignorance is the root of all the other afflictions, whether they’re latent, appear sporadically, or dominant If you don’t understand things fully, chances are you’re going to think and act in a way that’s not in your ultimate best interest, at least from time to time. To say that it’s hard for us to comprehend the intricacies of the universe, and our place within it is clearly an understatement. Unless you’re a highly experienced yogi, a paranormal scientist or perhaps a clairvoyant you see little evidence of any existence beyond the material realm. So of course we’re going to believe it's all there is – as if our current bodies and minds, and the present physical world is all we have. With the best will in the world, starting from this basis of ignorance will cause us problems. If you try to bake bread from a dodgy recipe which forgets to include the yeast, the bread will not rise, no matter how well you do everything else. In the mind, what we’re cooking up instead is a toxic mix of egotism, confused desire, needless fear, and a short-termist view that our existence is over only a single lifetime. Ok, so clearly we’re not all that bad. It’s not like we go around like raving egomaniacs, living each moment like it’s our last in a pleasure-seeking frenzy (well, not most of us, anyway, although I may know a few and it actually sounds quite fun :) ). But we do harbour these afflictions in different strengths and at different times, and often there are triggers which cause them to appear. Patanjali’s system aims to weaken these afflictions, and ultimately over time, wear them down to the point where we’re no longer bothered by them and just live in a state of happiness without the baggage. #eastlondonyoga #yogasutrachallenge #trueyogacollective #londonyoga #innerpeace #jivanmukta #ditchthebaggage
