#yogasutrachallenge Book II Sutra 3 – The impediments to enlightenment and self-realisation are ignorance, ego, desire, aversion and clinging to life. Patanjali identifies 5 afflictions of the mind that perpetuate our cycle of suffering. He lists ignorance, ego, desire, aversion and clinging to life, and as is the case in Sanskrit, the order of the list prioritises the first item ignorance is the most significant of these. In fact, some commentators consider ignorance to be the cause of all the afflictions – if you eliminate ignorance, the others will go as well – and this seems to make sense to me for the most part. The problem with the thoughts that arise as a result of these afflictions is that they lead to behaviour which causes additional karma for ourselves in all sorts of ways; karma which has to come home to roost at some stage or another, in this lifetime or another. Not only that, but they cloud the mind right in the here and now. Anyone who’s been a smoker or an addict of any kind will know the feeling of being able to think of nothing else but getting their next ‘fix’, for example. But we deny and justify things to ourselves all the time which we ultimately know are wrong, not just as individuals but as society at large. Indeed, our culture rewards the ego-driven and materialistic. No wonder it becomes so hard to realise that these values will not get us where we want to be. #natalieyoga.com #eastlondonyoga #yogasutrachallenge #trueyogacollective #londonyoga #peaceandlove #trueyoga #birdofparadise #thewick #hackneywick
